Why a residential rehab centre?

A rehab centre provides treatment for people who have a substance or behavioural addiction. Such treatment will focus primarily on the psychological aspect of the addiction by using therapeutic and educational techniques.

At the start of treatment a residential rehab clinic will address the physical dependence common to substance addictions, such as alcohol and heroin. Detox at a residential rehab clinic will involve the prescription of medication to help the body cope with the initial withdrawal period. Their aim is to minimise the discomfort during detox and make the process as comfortable as possible. In residential rehab centres, medical professionals will be available or on-call to help during this time if necessary.

Following this, individuals will have access to an intensive psychological and therapeutic programme. This aims to address the causes underlying the dependence, to educate individuals on the nature of their dependence, and to aid the development of effective coping and relapse prevention strategies. This will be delivered in the form of one-to-one therapy, group therapy, workshops and lectures, planned activities outside the treatment centre and reflection activities, amongst others. Most centres will also offer holistic and relaxation therapies, such as reflexology, acupuncture and yoga.

Residential rehab clinics will be able to cater to a number of substance addictions. These include alcohol and benzodiazepines, for which a medically supported detox is often a necessity, alongside other substances such as heroin, cannabis, cocaine and prescription medications.

Receiving the medical and psychological support offered at residential rehab centre or residential rehab clinic is likely to bring a higher outcome of success than other forms of treatment. This is supported by the National Treatment Outcomes Research Study (NTORS). This research indicated that positive outcomes were seen for individuals with severe addictions who accessed a residential rehab centre. Treatment at a residential rehab centre was also more effective for those with long standing addictions opposed to outpatient options.

Some of the benefits of a residential rehab centre are that people are completely removed from a problematic environment that they may strongly associate with their addiction. The secure environment offered by residential rehab centres, and travelling outside of a familiar area of substance abuse means it is much more difficult to obtain the substance of abuse or carry out the addictive behaviour. Furthermore, individuals also have round the clock support from highly professional and experienced individuals in the field of addiction.

When should someone seek a residential rehab centre?

Anyone who suspects that they are suffering from an addiction should consider a residential rehabilitation centre as their first choice of treatment. Although community treatments may be available, they are much less intensive than residential rehab clinics. Therefore, if such help is affordable privately or available on the NHS in your area, then it is an option worth careful consideration.

There are a number of signs that may indicate the presence of substance dependence. For instance, an individual’s behaviour may change as it becomes focused upon obtaining the substance. The person may become irritable, agitated and withdrawn. Their social habits may also change, such as their circle of friends. Physically, their appearance may also decline in terms of a significant loss of weight or general sickly appearance.  If any of these indicators apply to you or a loved one, call us now. We can help you find a programme tailored to your needs, wishes and budget.

Types of Residential Rehab Clinic

Triage Healthcare work with private residential rehabs throughout the UK and abroad. Therefore, wherever you are and whatever you are looking for, we can help you find a way to access the support and treatment required to start your recovery.

Whilst it would clearly be preferable to go to a residential rehabilitation centre without having to pay for it, it is important to remember that there is an imbalance between availability of residential rehabilitation centres in the NHS and the demand in the community. Therefore, there can often be long waiting lists involved when trying to access residential rehab. However, community based treatments and the attendance of fellowship meetings certainly stand individuals a better chance of recovery than by accessing no help at all.

In some cases, individuals may also be offered a home-based rehabilitation programme. This may involve the prescription of detox medication followed by community-based psychological support. Although a choice some people may consider, detox at a residential rehabilitation centre is always advised primarily as it provides much more intensive medical, psychological, therapeutic and peer support, and its effectiveness over community based treatments is evidence-based (NTORS).

How long could detox treatment for drug and alcohol addiction take?

The length of treatment will depend primarily on the individual. A minimum of four weeks is recommended for alcohol addiction, although some centres will offer a minimum of 7 to 10 days for detox to address just the physical addiction. Six weeks is recommended for drug addiction, although similarly some centres will offer a minimum of two weeks for detox only. However it is important not to forget the vital role intensive psychological and therapeutic treatment plays in long-term recovery.

How much does a Residential Rehab Clinic cost?

The cost of a residential rehabilitation centre will vary in terms of the accommodation standards, location and level of nursing and psychiatric care provided. Regardless of cost, all of the residential rehabilitation centres Triage Healthcare work with offer excellent psychological and therapeutic care and are regulated by the appropriate governing body.
