What is a rehab center?

A rehab center refers to a facility where rehabilitation takes place for those looking to overcome an addiction.

Rehabilitation centres can cater for a range of alcohol and substance abuse problems, including alcohol, heroin, cannabis, cocaine and prescription drugs. Some rehab centres also offer help to those suffering from other forms of dependence such as love addiction, gambling and gaming problems. Treatment programmes for depression and anxiety are also on offer at some rehabilitation clinics as these are commonly experienced alongside addiction.

The programme completed in a rehab centre will aim to give the client the skills needed to avoid relapsing, and will also educate them about their addiction. It is important for the person in treatment at a rehab center to fully understand their addiction and the impact it has on them and the individuals around them.  Rehabilitation clinics do this through a comprehensive programme of one to one therapy, group therapy and 12 step classes. Rehab centers also offer other types of activities such as diary keeping, reflection groups, educational workshops and relapse prevention classes.

The treatment program offered at rehabilitation clinics aim to provide the individual with the coping skills and tools to maintain a life free from substances following their stay in a rehab center. Rehabilitation clinics offer aftercare programmes following the inpatient treatment, where clients can return to the rehab center for group therapy after they have been discharged. This helps to maintain links with the clinic and friends made whilst in treatment at a rehab center.

When should someone seek rehab help?

A rehabilitation center can be accessed by anyone who suffers from an addiction. Some individuals they may recognise when their drug or alcohol use has become uncontrollable and that professional help is needed. For others it may take a lot of support and motivation from friends and family before they become agreeable to treatment at a rehabilitation center.

There are a number of warning signs that suggest someone would benefit from treatment at a rehabilitation unit. Their dependence may be affecting their social life and relationships in a negative manner. They may be irritable, secretive and dishonest to those around them. Their drug use may begin to have a negative impact on their work. Financial problems may arise due to the excessive usage of substances. Normal lifestyle patterns and behaviour are affected and the person will begin to ‘miss out’ on things in order to satisfy their addiction. Sometimes the health and psychological well-being of someone may begin to concern them or those around them. In severe and well established cases of addiction the person may begin to take part in criminal activities to fund their addiction, including stealing from family members. Anyone exhibiting any of these warning signs would benefit from treatment at a rehab centre.

Where to rehab from drug addiction

Private residential rehabilitation clinics can provide the most immediate access to treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. Accessing a rehab centre uk wide is preferable in many cases, especially for detoxification, as it is usually considered safer (medically) and offers more psychological and emotional care during the time spent in a rehab centre. A rehabilitation unit will also deliver and focus on psychological, educational and social therapy to address all aspects of the dependence. Another benefit is that a rehab center provides a safe and supportive environment away from many of the associations and triggers of the addiction that an individual may have at home. On-going care provided for someone following their treatment at a rehab clinic is also important and maximizes the effectiveness of the rehab centre previously accessed. This can be accessed through aftercare counselling, community care coordinator visits, specialist doctor appointments and attendance of AA or NA meetings.

It is possible to access private rehabilitation clinic services overseas. This option can be particularly appealing to those individuals who have already accessed rehab centers in the UK with limited success. By travelling overseas to access rehab centers, the person has an exclusive setting in which to engage with treatment. Overseas rehab centres treatment can also represent better value for money in some cases.

NHS services may offer rehab centers for those who suffer from an addiction. For those who require a detox a short stay in a residential rehabilitation unit can be arranged, or where appropriate a community detox or maintenance program may be offered. Rehabilitation centres are difficult to access on the NHS due to limited funding and waiting lists. To see if residential center treatment is an option an assessment with the local addiction services will need to be completed. For more advice on local free services and rehab centers call one of our experienced advisors.  We know the challenges faced when trying to access NHS rehab centers. We can offer advice on alternative rehab centers as well as offer support and encouragement during this time.

How long could treatment in a drug rehab center take?

The duration of treatment at rehab clinics can vary depending on the severity of the addiction and if any other substances are being taken. A minimum of 14 days is required by most rehab centres to safely detox, although in some circumstances it may last a longer period of time. The duration of treatment including the psychological support can be between 6 and 12 weeks at a rehabilitation center.

Regardless of the length of treatment at a rehabilitation unit, the issue of retention is central to effectiveness, and completing both a medicated detox and psychological programme will impact on the success of the treatment planned (Trathen et al., 2008).

How much does a private rehabilitation center cost?

The cost of treatment at a rehabilitation centre can vary depending on the duration, clinic and amount of aftercare accessed. The level of medical cover at a rehab clinic may also have an impact on the cost.
