Rehab News:Working with GPs to limit alcohol consumption

A new initiative in Dundee aims to tackle the rising problem of binge drinking, and make people more aware of just how much they drink and the damage it can do to their health, according to reports in the Dundee Evening Telegraph.

Tayside Council on Alcohol (TCA) is launching a new screening programme involving GPs.

If it goes ahead as planned, it will involve doctors taking advantage of a patient's routine visit to bring up the issue of alcohol consumption.

Experts are particularly alarmed about the impact that excessive drinking is having on women, many of whom drink more than a bottle of wine in one session. They are concerned that many women are not aware that they need not wake up in a gutter to be considered problem drinkers.

TCA's adult services manager Gillian Ferguson told the Evening Telegraph: "Women are particularly at risk from alcohol. Every organ of a woman's body can be affected by alcohol far more than a man's."

The new programme would involve the GPs referring people who want more support to experts in the field.

Health guidelines recommend that women limit their alcohol intake to two or three units a day, which is the equivalent of about one large glass of wine.
