Rehab News:Welsh council seeks to slash drinking

West Glamorgan Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse is starting up a binge drinking group to help people cope with alcohol problems.

Swansea area manager Christina MacDonald told the local Evening Post that 24-hour drinking has had a definite impact on their services, with referrals of 16 to 24-year-olds being "quite prevalent".

"We see 300-plus people a week, as we have group therapy, education groups and one-to-ones - it's phenomenal," she revealed.

Ms MacDonald continued: "Alcohol crosses the board, there is no stereotype - it can be professionals or the unemployed who need help."

The alcohol treatment expert also suggested that placing health warnings on alcohol may help to address the problem.

A spokeswoman for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport commented: "We want to turn around people's attitudes to alcohol."

However, she admitted that changing the nation's view of alcohol would "not happen overnight".
