Rehab News:US aims to reduce teen drinking

The US is taking a positive step forward in the fight against underage drinking following the launch of a new national campaign.

The 'We Don't Serve Teens' week began last Monday, highlighting the positive action parents and other adults can take to reduce teenage drinking.

According to experts, 65 per cent of teenagers who drink alcohol get their beverages from older relatives and friends so the campaign is encouraging adults not to provide alcohol to young people.

Utah attorney general Mark Shurtleff, who helped to introduce the campaign, told the Daily Herald that a lot of teenagers drink.

"We need to continue to get the message out here to families and parents and everybody else that we need to be responsible and talk to our kids," Mr Shurtleff enthused.

He noted that, although the campaign will emphasise the illegality of providing alcohol to minors, the intention is not to scare people.

"We want to motivate them, not out of fear that they're going to be charged, but out of responsibility to the young people," he explained.
