An alcohol treatment centre in the US is launching an unusual new method of helping its clients beat their addition.

Known as Trapeze Therapy, individuals entering the drug treatment programme walk a high wire and attain other circus acrobatic skills, such as jumping on a large trampoline.

As a result, they learn to overcome fears and incorporate new life skills that will help them prepare to face uncomfortable situations in life.

"This type of experiential event allows…students to experience the joys of sobriety in real life situations," said Loree Cohen, executive director of the alcohol and drug treatment centre.

"Through this kind of therapy, students are allowed to feel what it is like to let go and trust a power greater than themselves. Not only does it provide the opportunity for them to feel like they have overcome something, it is a challenge that allows the students to process the feeling of accomplishment."
