Rehab News:Survey on provision of injecting equipment to drug misusers

The Hepatitis C Action Plan was launched by the Scottish Government Health department in 2006 to increase awareness about Hepatitis C, and to collect evidence to inform proposals for the development of Hepatitis C services. Phase II of the Action Plan which began in April 2008 and is due to run over the next 3 years, is principally concerned with prevention, testing, treatment and support, and education. ISD have been working in partnership with Health Protection Scotland on the prevention strand of the Action Plan, with a view to reducing the sharing of needles/syringes and other injecting equipment by injecting drug users.

As part of Phase II, the Substance Misuse Team at ISD is developing a survey that will gather baseline data on the provision of injecting equipment in 2007/08. The survey will focus on the distribution and uptake of injecting equipment to drug misusers across Scotland. This information will be used to make recommendations on developing an information system for regular collection of data on injecting equipment, in accordance with recommendations in the Hepatitis C Action Plan.

The survey will be implemented in the autumn and services will have 4 weeks to respond. The target respondent group will be all those services providing needle exchange schemes: specialist drug treatment services (including outreach); pharmacies; Health Board pharmacy coordinators; hospitals and police custody suites.
