Rehab News:Study shows many falsely believe they can overcome alcohol problems on their own
New research has concluded that many young adults with alcohol problems shun seeking treatment in the belief that they can deal with their problems themselves, but in reality this belief is not matched by action.
A study published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry reports that 1,003 members of a birth cohort were interviewed at age 25 about the period since the previous interview at age 21.
A total of 351 of the study group reported alcohol problems over the previous four years, but just 26 of the 351 (seven per cent) made contact with treatment specialists to seek help.
Even in the subgroup of 55 classed as having alcohol dependence, only 24 per cent (13 people) made contact with
alcohol treatment specialists.
Of those with problems who did not seek help or advice, nearly all (96 per cent) thought they did not need help.
Approximately one-quarter thought the problem would get better by itself (29 per cent) or did not think to seek help (25 per cent).
Figures for those who thought they did not need help showed that 75 per cent continued to experience problems and almost all drank well above guidelines at least on their heaviest drinking occasion. Only 43 per cent had attempted to quit or cut down on their drinking.
"Belief in ability to handle problems oneself was often not matched by action," the study concluded.
