Rehab News:Study points to new alcohol treatment method

The possibility of a new form of alcohol treatment has been raised following the discovery that people who regret their actions after binge drinking are less likely to do so again.

Dr Richard Cooke, an expert at Aston University, gave questionnaires to 178 Scottish students to discover their drinking habits.

The questionnaire asked for information on their previous and predicted future drinking habits, as well as details on any subsequent feelings of regret.

Students were then asked to complete a second questionnaire the following week, providing details of their alcohol intake during the previous seven days.

Reporting his findings at the Division of Health Psychology Annual Conference at the University of Nottingham, Dr Cooke revealed that participants who had expressed regret at their previous binge drinking behaviour were more likely to avoid binge drinking in the future.

The expert commented: "The study suggests that modifying attitudes and inducing regret may be effective strategies for reducing binge drinking intentions among undergraduates, which should reduce subsequent binge drinking behaviour."
