Rehab News:Study highlights need for army alcohol treatment

A new study due to be published in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that a growing number of soldiers are reporting mental health and alcohol concerns following deployment.

Cols Charles Milliken and Charles Hoge found that soldiers have become more likely to report signs of post-combat stress and post-traumatic stress disorder between health assessments.

In addition, the study of 88,235 Iraq veterans showed that 11.8 per cent of soldiers admit to alcohol misuse, yet just 0.2 per cent are referred for alcohol treatment.

The researchers said that the army must improve its provision of alcohol treatment, although they welcomed the fact that so many soldiers are willing to report their problem.

Col Milliken, who is principal investigator at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research's psychiatry and neuroscience division, emphasised the need to detect problems while they are still "small, simple and temporary".

"When these problems get bigger and more complicated, they are much harder to treat and it increases the likelihood that they will become a chronic, long-term problem."
