Rehab News:Study highlights high-risk groups for alcoholism
Alcoholics over the age of 65 are often not diagnosed because denial and apparent good health can mask the signs of
alcohol dependence, researchers have shown.
Experts at Penn State found that elderly males are at particularly high risk of not being diagnosed and said that they should be made the focus of screening programmes.
The findings, which were presented at an annual meeting of AcademyHealth, resulted from an analysis of data from the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) and the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), each including more than 10,000 participants.
Researcher Kristine Pringle, a doctoral candidate in health policy and administration at Penn State, said: "Using the risk factors we've identified in our study, healthcare providers and policymakers may be better able to target screenings and policy interventions toward the highest-risk groups who may be systematically under-diagnosed and under-treated."
She continued: "Older men are at particularly high risk for not being diagnosed but our results also support the view that older females may be denying a drinking problem since women are half as likely as men to self-report but only slightly less likely to be diagnosed."
Ms Pringle also warned that as more baby boomers enter old age, the problem of
alcohol abuse is likely to escalate, making it all the more important that healthcare providers understand which groups are particularly at risk and target them for screening.
