Rehab News:Smart Recovery

Smart Recovery

Following a r residential alcohol detox or community treatment, those suffering from alcoholism need ongoing support. Drink and Drug news have written an article detailing how smart recovery has offered such support. The article details that although AA is a meaningful avenue of support, it may not be for everybody. Smart recovery offers service users a method of support to maintain abstinence using a self-help peer led sessions. It allows those with alcohol problems to achieve significant and content lives using science based philosophies, an alternative to the spiritual approach offered via fellow-ship meetings.

The article states that smart recovery is both similar and different to fellow-ship meetings. Rather than focusing on past events, smart recovery focuses on the present and near future to guide recovery. The primary framework of this support group is cognitive behavioural therapy, emotive behavioural therapy and motivational enhancement therapy.

Furthermore, the support groups are lead by trained facilitators, an aspect of which differs from peer guided fellow-ship meetings. Members of the group are encouraged to speak with one another and offer individual to support to fellow-peers to get the best support possible. The article suggests that people in recovery often use a combination of fellow-ship and smart recovery groups to ensure they remain abstinence via all avenues available. Smart recovery encourages the use of fellow-ship meetings in combination of their own approach as they acknowledge it is not their place to suggest one level of support over another.

Smart recovery was established in the USA by those in recovery and addiction psychologists. Although it is new to the UK, it is rapidly expanding, doubling in size over the past 6 months. Additional work is being undertaken by Smart Recovery to make it more accessible around the UK. Thus far, meetings have been most successful in the North West, but with additional work and investment, the organisation hopes to expand this to make it accessible to everybody, a positive note for those in recovery.
