Rehab News:Shock treatment aims to tackle the threat of alcohol abuse

Students in Scotland have been taking part in an alcohol awareness programme that aims to highlight the possible damage caused by too much drink.

Pupils at Forres Academy in Moray attended interactive workshops run by their school nurse and staff from NHS Health Improvement and Moray's Drug and Alcohol Action Team, the Press and Journal reports.

To educate youngsters about the dangers of binge drinking the sessions will offer advice about the effects of alcohol on the body.

Drug and alcohol information and prevention officer Stephen Hounsom said: "Media pressure, aggressive sales techniques from companies, peer pressure and parental behaviour are all to blame for the increase in drinking.

"Trying to get the message across to parents about the dangers of excess consumption is really hard."

However, school nurse Jacquelyn Phillips was hopeful the course would have an impact: "We are hoping that the children become more aware of the amount of alcohol being drunk, so we've got some workshops about what's in a measure, facts on the long and short-term effects of binge drinking."

In a wider drive on reducing alcoholism Scotland's first Alcohol Awareness Week was held last week.
