Rehab News:Sharp rise in those receiving alcohol treatment in Wales

The number of people being treated for alcohol problems in the South Wales Valleys has risen by more than 40 per cent in the past year, according to new figures released by the NHS in Wales.

Last year, 15,415 people were treated for alcohol misuse in the region – up from 10,899 the year before, the Western Mail reports.

Commenting on the figures, Welsh Assembly member Mark Isherwoo said: "Much more needs to be done to help those suffering with drug and alcohol misuse problems.

"The lives of vulnerable people across the Valleys are being wrecked by drug and alcohol abuse.

"Drug and alcohol abusers need treatment, training, housing and an introduction to the workplace."

The Welsh Assembly government said alcohol and drug treatment was a priority and an extra £9.6 million has been allocated for such over the next three years.
