Rehab News:Scottish MSP keen to tackle alcohol abuse

A Scottish MSP has called for more to be done to tackle the problem of excessive drinking in the region.

Writing in the Banffshire Journal, Stewart Stevenson, a representative of the Scottish National Party, said it was important the government adopted a broad approach to dealing with the problems of anti-social drinking and alcohol abuse.

Tough measures on associated problems, including cracking down on drinks promotions and making areas alcohol-free, were an important step, Mr Stevenson said.

"Anti-social drinking is a problem which affects the welfare of all of us in society – from the health of those who engage in such behaviour to the safety, peace of mind and general wellbeing of the rest of the public," he commented.

"While the government has no wish to restrict the social and responsible enjoyment of alcohol, irresponsible, excessive drinking reaps only negative consequences for individuals, families, communities and society as a whole."

According to Alcohol Focus Scotland, alcohol-related problems cost Scotland £1.1 billion per year in terms of the costs incurred through expenditure on the NHS, social work and alcohol treatment, as well as the burden placed upon police and emergency services.
