Rehab News:Scotland takes positive alcohol action
The Scottish government is taking action to combat the nation's drinking culture, with cut-price alcohol offers set to become illegal.
Drink promotions will be outlawed in retail outlets, including supermarkets and corner shops, as early as 2008, according to justice secretary Kenny MacAskill.
In addition, shops will be required to display alcohol in a separate area to other goods from 2009, the BBC reports.
Speaking at the Alcohol Focus Scotland annual conference, Mr MacAskill said: "From young people rampaging the streets shouting abuse at passers by to people dying in our hospitals of alcoholic liver disease - alcohol misuse has a lot to answer for.
"By taking action to turn off the tap of cheap drink, to end irresponsible promotions wherever alcohol is sold, and making sure alcohol isn't sold at every turn in the supermarket, I believe we can turn this around," he added.
The 2003 Scottish Health Survey revealed that 27 per cent of Scottish men normally drink in excess of the recommended limit of 21 units per week.
