Rehab News:Research suggests new ways to reduce alcohol usage

New research that reveals students who took a taste test of their favourite beers couldn't tell the difference between low- and regular-strength varieties could lead to new alcohol policies, it has been suggested.

The study by the Centre for Addictions Research at the University of Victoria will be used as the basis of an appeal to the state government to tie liquor prices to alcohol content, the Times Colonist reports.

The rationale behind the move is that if low-alcohol beverages were taxed less and so cheaper and high-alcohol drinks more expensive, consumer tastes would change toward less potent beverages, the paper explained.

The added benefit would be that the tax receipts would potentially remain unchanged.

Tim Stockwell, the centre's director and co-leader of the study cited the example of Australia which began linking liquor taxes to a drink's alcohol content in the 1980s.

This has been credited with the fact that there are now more than 38 varieties of low-alcohol beer on the market comprising 30 per cent of beer sales.

However, in British Columbia beers with less than four per cent alcohol only account for 0.2 per cent of the market.
