Rehab News:Research may prevent future drinking
A $396,000 grant is set to help researchers at the University of Iowa (UI) study risky decision-making among children, which can in some cases lead to
binge drinking.
The grant, which has been secured from the National Science Foundation, will be used by Irwin Levin, a UI professor with joint appointments in psychology and marketing, and Joshua Weller, a doctor in psychology, to track changes in children's decision-making competence.
They will ask ten-year-olds to complete surveys about their perception of risk of real-life scenarios and determine the extent to which they engage in such risks and the way in which they believe their peers would respond.
They will then survey the same group at the age of 13 and 14, including questions on temptations such as smoking, drugs, alcohol and sex.
Professor Levin explained: "We hope to identify characteristics of kids who become risk-takers, such as lack of attention to risk levels or unwillingness to factor in long-term consequences.
"If we can do that, future research could identify ways to proactively intervene and help those kids before they engage in risky behaviors like smoking or drinking, having unprotected sex or disregarding traffic laws."
