Rehab News:Research brings new hope for cocaine treatment
New research has given hope for more treatment options for cocaine abuse.
Scientists have discovered that rather than just affecting dopamine levels, known as the brain's "reward" chemical because it help control emotions, the drug also has an impact on brain metabolism.
This is the process by which the brain regulates its chemical output.
It has long been known that cocaine blocks dopamine transporters, resulting in the effect that the happy-inducing chemical keeps sending pleasure signals. Past research into treatment has focused on combating this effect.
But researchers at the US Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory found that cocaine has significant effects on brain metabolism, when carrying out the study on mice. This suggests that there may be new ways to treat the addiction.
Brookhaven neuroscientist Panayotis Thanos, who led the research, said: "These metabolic factors may be a strong regulator of cocaine use and abuse and may also suggest new avenues for addiction treatments."
The study will appear in the May 2008 issue of the journal Synapse.
Yesterday a Nigerian member of a smuggling gang who brought £500,000 worth of cocaine to Scotland was jailed for six years at Edinburgh High Court.
