Alcohol treatment shortage in London

The charity Alcohol Concern have recently published a new report which details that in England alcohol related crime is highest in London. The report indicated a national average of 8 alcohol related crimes per 1000 whereas in London it is a third higher at 12 per 1000. As well as higher numbers of alcohol related crimes London also has higher numbers of individuals suffering from both mental health and alcohol problems in comparison to other parts of England. Interestingly it is not necessarily that the London population drink much more than those in other areas; in fact Don Schenker, Chief Executive of Alcohol Concern, states that; “Londoners drink less than adults in most other parts of the UK. Its challenge lies in a population that is mobile and characterised by high levels of social deprivation, mental illness, drug use and alcohol-related crime”.

Most of the thirty-one London Boroughs that were audited in the report showed plans on a local level to address alcohol misuse however local areas were unable to readily provide information about the level of funding put towards the prevention of excessive drinking and the plans that were in place were not reviewed on a recurrent basis. The report also indicated that in terms of the number of places commissioned in a variety of structured modalities (for example, structured counselling, structured day programmes, inpatient detoxification and residential London rehab facilities ) the demand for treatment is consistently in excess of what is available. Furthermore the report discussed how treatment services could be affected by the reduction in funding despite good progress being made in funding new treatment services in London.
