Rehab News:Reducing shame 'can improve alcohol treatment'
Shame and guilt have significant implications in the misuse of alcohol and drugs, it has been revealed. As a result, scientists at the University at Buffalo's Research Institute on Addictions (RIA) and the George Mason University have established the importance of differentiating between feelings of shame and guilt in alcohol treatment programmes and in developing alcohol abuse prevention programmes.
According to Ronda Dearing, RIA research scientist and lead author on the study published in the August 2005 issue of Addictive Behaviours, individuals prone to the feeling of shame when forced to confront a range of life issues are more likely to turn to drugs and alcohol as a defence mechanism.
Meanwhile, guilt, or even the feeling of) wrongdoing following a specific action, was found to be largely independent of substance abuse issues.
As a result, counsellors might prove more effective if they can work with clients to decrease shame-proneness in favour of enhancing guilt-proneness.
"Whether or not shame is a cause of problematic substance use, other problems that go hand-in-hand with shame such as anger or interpersonal difficulties are sufficient justification for implementing shame-reduction interventions into treatment," commented Ms Dearing.
"Successfully reducing shame is likely to result in better treatment outcomes."
