Rehab News:Profits from drinks sales could go towards alcohol treatment

The Scottish Justice Secretary has announced that some of the profits made by selling alcohol could go towards funding treatment centres.

Justice secretary Kenny MacAskill was vistiting an alcohol rehabilitation project in Aberdeen when he made the comments.

"I think hard-pressed casualty units in our hospitals and police cells are not the best place for people that are drunk and incapable, they have better things to do with their time," Mr MacAskill told the BBC.

"I want to tackle this by banning irresponsible promotions from off-sales and implementing a polluter pays approach that makes those who profit from selling alcohol help pay for the social costs."

Mr McAskill was visiting a centre where people who have drunk too much to be allowed home by the police can spend the night, rather than in police cells.
