Rehab News:Professional gives advice for parents of drinkers

A health professional has provided some pointers for parents who are concerned their child is drinking excessively.

Nancy Nutt Chase, programme director of a student wellness programme at the University of Delaware, told the university's UDaily publication that all new university students show an increase in drinking behaviour during the first six weeks at college and that even those students who had abstained in the past are likely to start drinking once they start their course.

She recommends that parents who believe their young person has started to use alcohol habitually should confront the problem "with love and concern".

"Tell your student of your suspicions and how you feel they are founded in logic and not just worry," she advised.

"Ask for your child's reaction and don't shut him or her down."

Ms Chase claimed that the most common mistake made by parents is to do nothing or to try and justify their child's behaviour as merely being "part of the college scene".

"If a parent has suspicions, he or she should confront them immediately," she concluded.
