Rehab News:Prize to help fight alcohol misuse

Youths are receiving cash incentives to participate in a scheme aimed at the prevention of alcohol abuse and stand to win a £20,000 prize.

The national 2008 Alcohol Misuse Prevention Awards, otherwise known as the Mentor UK Champ Awards (Promoting Children's Health through Alcohol Misuse Prevention), is run every two years by Mentor UK, the country's leading drugs and alcohol misuse prevention charity working with children and young people.

According to the School Health Education Unit 2007, one in ten 10-to 11-year-olds and one in five 12- to 13-year-olds have had a drink in the last week.

Awards will be rewarded for three categories including work in school, work in the community and projects led by young people.

Stewart McKay, project manager of The Greater Easterhouse Alcohol Awareness Project (GEAAP), one of the previous winners of the award, said: "One of the most pleasing aspects about winning the Mentor UK award, in the schools category, was that we were selected as overall winner not only by a board of professionals but also by panels of young people from around the country."
