Rehab News:Pregnancy and poverty are 'barriers' to alcohol treatment

Pregnancy, poverty and a lack of accessible child care are all common barriers to women in need of alcohol treatment, a national substance abuse conference in Canada has heard.

Researcher Nancy Poole told delegates that women need specialised alcohol treatment programmes to meet their unique needs, noting that the lack of dedicated harm reduction strategies for women is "a huge obstacle".

Ms Poole, a researcher from the British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women in Vancouver, told the conference that there also needs to be better integration of various treatment programmes for women who have been abused or who are mentally ill.

"We need to work so that it's not this fragmented thing - 'Well, you can only get this here and you have to go over there for that'," she claimed, suggesting that experts need to work out how they can "knit" drug and alcohol treatment programmes together, the Canadian Press reports.

The conference was attended by experts from the fields of substance abuse treatment, prevention and harm reduction.
