Rehab News:Potential alcohol problem for 20 percent of southern Scots
One-fifth of patients screened in a new programme in southern Scotland have been found to have a potential alcohol problem.
The new scheme, which sees GPs offering to screen patients whose conditions could be linked to alcohol consumption, was carried out in Dumfries and Galloway.
A total of 800 people were checked and 20 per cent of these were assessed as needing further help or support.
Lorraine Hyland, project officer for the Alcohol and Drug Support Agency in Dumfries and Galloway, said: "It is very much similar to how we looked at smoking, it's about changing attitude and culture and giving people some information so they can make some healthy choices themselves."
The programme can refer patients to counselling or detoxification services and their progress is then reassessed after three months.
Results have so far shown noticeable improvements in participants' drinking behaviour, with about 33 per cent of them having reduced their alcohol consumption.
Last week comma Scotland's justice secretary Kenny MacAskill spoke to the Sunday Herald about the detrimental impact that
alcohol abuse is having on the country, suggesting: "It is time to turn off the cheap drink tap."
