Rehab News:Polish alcoholics group set up in Edinburgh

A new group has been set up in Edinburgh to cater for Polish alcoholics.

Believed to be the first of its kind in Scotland, the new Alcoholics Anonymous group should help to meet the needs of the city's growing immigrant population, many of whom come from eastern Europe.

According to Tom Wood, chairman of Edinburgh's action team, the 35,000 Poles thought to now have settled in the Lothians have created challenges as they have different requirements.

He told the Scotsman that the team are "focusing on hard-to-reach groups, which include ethnic minorities".

"Many ethnic minorities don't drink because it is against their religion, but that doesn't apply to many east Europeans," he explained.

Mr Wood emphasised that the problem is probably no greater among Polish people than it is among Scots, but noted that "with the number coming to the city, they bring their own social problems".

Group alcoholic meetings have been to be an effective form of alcohol treatment, enabling alcoholics to share their experiences with fellow drinkers and support each other through their recovery.
