Rehab News:Pilot programme curbs college alcohol abuse

A pilot intervention programme designed to reduce alcohol abuse among college students has achieved promising results, experts have reported.

The programme is geared towards college students at the University of Cincinnati who commonly turn to drinking to prevent anxiety at social gatherings, according to principal investigator Giao Tran.

The programme uses a combination of motivational interviewing and behavioural therapy to help undergraduates who feel anxious in social situations to curb the tendencies that lead to problem drinking.

Preliminary results from the pilot, which involved 22 participants, show that students reported a significant reduction in the number of drinks consumed and in episodes of heavy drinking.

In addition, participants claimed to be less worried about the judgement of their peers and felt more confident about turning down drinks.

Professor Tran revealed: "While prior studies have shown that a brief intervention using motivational interviewing helps reduce alcohol consumption or alcohol-related problems among college students, this study is the first to add strategies for coping with social anxiety in relation to alcohol intervention for college students."
