Rehab News:Phone counselling may encourage alcohol treatment

Telephone counselling can be a viable form of alcohol treatment, a study has found.

Researchers from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health found that men benefited from short-term telephone counselling, even if they chose not to pursue alcohol treatment.

The study, which is published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, looked at nearly 900 men and women with alcohol abuse or dependence.

Approximately half of the volunteers received up to six phone counselling sessions, while the others were only given a pamphlet on healthy lifestyles.

Alcohol dependent men who received counselling reduced their total alcohol consumption over a three-month period and their number of 'risky drinking days' declined by an average of 31.8 per cent.

Meanwhile, the volunteers who only received self-help literature cut back by just 9.7 per cent over the period.

Lead researcher Dr Richard Brown revealed: "Once they had established rapport with that counsellor over the phone, many patients really looked forward to their sessions."

He said that the study shows that "we shouldn't just give up on those alcohol dependent patients who cannot or choose not to get treatment".

"If we can identify these folks in primary care waiting rooms and provide telephone counselling…we can start to help many of these patients," he concluded.
