Rehab News:Patients to get controversial alcohol treatment
Patients at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital are to be given a controversial
alcohol treatment which makes the patient feel ill if they drink alcohol.
The medicine, called disulfiram or 'Antabuse', causes severe headaches, mood swings, breathlessness, palpitations and nausea and, although patients do not benefit from reduced craving, the effects of drinking while on the medication are so unpleasant that it becomes a strong deterrent.
The reaction occurs within minutes of drinking alcohol and lasts for a number of hours.
Tom Wood, chairman of the Edinburgh Drug and Alcohol Action Team, told the Edinburgh Evening News: "This is new to Edinburgh, and the demand has been coming from clients.
"They want to do this because they want to keep on the straight and narrow. Antabuse is highly effective in terms of cost and efficiency, and it is a recognised intervention.
"The secret of success is to have a whole recipe of intervention methods, and the more tools in the box, the better placed we are."
