Rehab News:Parents 'should take greater responsibility' for children's binge drinking
A leading medical journal has suggested that parents need to take more responsibility for ensuring that their children do not binge drink.
An editorial in the Lancet argued that children in the UK were failing to be taught the important lesson of how to drink alcohol responsibly, saying: "The biggest share and burden of the partnership must fall on parents and guardians who should take greater responsibility for teaching children about drinking safely."
The article pointed to the fact that underage drinking has risen considerably over the last ten years and cited figures that 27 per cent of British 15-year-olds admit to having drunk at least five
alcoholic drinks in a row in the past month, a rise of five per cent since 1995.
Commenting on the soon to be published Youth Alcohol Action Plan, the editorial said that the government needs to take a number of major measures including banning alcohol advertising if it is to tackle binge drinking successfully.
It added: "For a healthy younger generation, society's relationship with alcohol has to change, beginning in the home."
A Times poll today suggested that a majority of voters are happy to pay the increased tax on alcohol announced by the chancellor in the budget this week.
