Rehab News:PM orders 24-hour drinking review

Prime minister Gordon Brown has ordered a Home Office review of legislation allowing 24-hour drinking after conceding that it has raised "strong feelings".

The 24-hour licensing laws were brought in at the end of 2005 and have been linked to newly-published figures revealing a small increase in violent behaviour committed between the hours of 18:00 and 06:00.

At his first monthly press conference at Downing Street, Mr Brown said: "Clearly there are strong feelings about what has happened. There has been in increase in the number of arrests between 18:00 and 06:00 and you might expect that, but it is not a very significant part of the amount of arrests that take place in our community."

The prime minister stressed that there is no need to rush a judgement, simply saying: "Let's look at the evidence when we do the review, and then let's see what the experience has been."

Critics have blamed the laws for an increase in binge drinking and shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley yesterday (July 23rd) joined chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson's call for a review, citing a "rapid increase in alcohol-related disease".
