Rehab News:Older alcohol abstainers enjoy normal mental function

A new study has revealed that older alcoholics who manage to abstain from alcohol for at least six months will probably have mental functioning on a similar level to other older adults.

The small-scale study found that elderly abstinent alcoholics performed as well as elderly non-alcoholics when asked to perform thinking and memory tests.

The findings will be welcomed by doctors and alcoholics alike, as they suggest older adults who are in recovery from alcoholism can retain intact cognitive function.

The trend could be due to long-term alcoholics' brains becoming more resistant to the effects of alcohol, and lead study author Dr George Fein told Reuters Health that abstinent alcoholics tend to have larger craniums, signalling a larger brain.

Commenting on the findings, which are published in Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, Dr Fein said: "Our research basically shows that early brain growth may mean the difference between normal functioning and cognitive impairment for abstinent alcoholics in their later years."
