Rehab News:OAP alcohol abuse on the rise

Figures show that the number of over 60s needing treatment for alcohol abuse is on the rise, according to a report in the Guardian.

The paper cited boredom and depression due to retiring too early and loneliness as factors leading to the older generation turning to drink.

It reported that the lack of focused attention on pensioners who have a problem with alcohol means that they find it difficult to access help.

The daughter of a 69-year-old alcoholic, Miriam Palmer, told the publication she believes that "these places [treatment centres] don't realise the very particular challenges this age group are up against".

Sue Allchurch, director of Linwood Group, said that it is estimated that over the last two years there as been an 18 per cent increase in the number of women over 60 and a 15 per cent increase in the number of men over 60 being admitted to alcohol treatment centres.

She added: "Combine boredom, loneliness and the worry of getting older and you have the perfect formula for someone to turn to drinking excessively," reported the paper.

Across the Atlantic, it has been reported recently that treatment for alcoholism for the over-60s has also been growing in the USA.
