Rehab News:North Tyneside to tackle alcohol dependence

The North Tyneside health and wellbeing partnership has approved a strategy which sets out how the borough will attempt to tackle the problem of alcohol dependence.

Produced by the North Tyneside Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy Group, the plan details how the borough will attempt to reduce the number of number of people admitted to hospital for alcohol-related diseases and the number of alcohol-related criminal offences by focussing on three areas - prevention, treatment and control.

Specifically, there will be a crackdown on alcohol-induced crime and anti-social behaviour, a drive to increase awareness of the dangers of alcohol consumption and extra effort will be afforded to improve alcohol treatment services.

"The strategy will focus on developing a preventative approach towards alcohol-related harm in north Tyneside, will provide services to support and treat those with harmful, hazardous and dependent drinkers and for their families and carers, and to promote public protection," commented alcohol strategy manager Matthew Hornsby, according to the News Guardian.

"This action plan will work at directly addressing a problem that is affecting many people within this borough."

The report will now be assessed by a number of other bodies.
