Rehab News:Nicotine may improve attention in recovering alcoholics
People who are in recovery from
alcoholism may have enhanced cognitive functioning if they smoke, researchers have said.
Experts at the University of Florida suggest that nicotine patches may therefore help to improve attention and working memory in newly recovering
alcoholics who have a history of smoking.
Sara Jo Nixon, professor in the university's department of psychiatry, explained: "The majority of newly recovering alcoholics, between 50 and 85 per cent, demonstrate significant problems in a wide array of tasks including visual-spatial, perceptual motor, learning and memory, attention/vigilance and abstracting and problem-solving.
"Although these deficits often fail to reach levels of 'clinical impairment', they represent a subtle, mild dysfunction when compared with community controls."
The findings, which are published in the December issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, add to a growing body of literature that suggests nicotine can have beneficial effects in certain situations.
Edith Sullivan, a professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, concluded that nicotine may indeed have some positive effects, despite its negative effects of many organs.
