Rehab News:New research could further understanding of reasons behind cocaine use

New research could enable scientists to better understand how to combat the emotional motivations of cocaine use.

A study published this month in the journal Neuron reveals findings of experiments with rats where their negative reactions to cocaine appear to echo those experience by humans.

During the experiment, it was found that despite developing an aversion to the taste of cocaine as opposed to a saline-based solution, the rats continued to choose to drink a solution laced with cocaine.

The researchers found that the aversive taste stimulated a specific brain region associated with the expression of motivated behaviours.

This is the first time scientists have been able to create an animal model of a negative effect driving drug taking, which is well-known to occur in humans.

Regina Carelli and colleagues wrote: "The importance of this study lies in this animal model's potential to define and then ameliorate the motivational properties of negative affect evoked by drug-associated stimuli and thereby decrease the drive for the drug."

Research released last month suggested that a common heart drug could be used to reduce cocaine cravings, after successes with a rat model.
