Rehab News:New method detects recent alcohol abuse
Doctors may be able to determine whether or not a person has an alcohol problem more easily within the next couple of years, thanks to a new pinprick detection method.
The system, developed by a researcher at the Lund University Faculty of Engineering in Sweden, allows doctors to detect any alcohol consumption over the previous two weeks, as well as whether or not the drinker has been on repeated weekend binge drinking sessions.
It uses a method called capillary electrophoresis (CE) to detect and measure the occurrence of phosphatidyl ethanol, a biomarker that only occurs if there is ethanol in the blood.
Creator Arthur Varga, an expert in applied biochemistry, said that it is important to uncover alcohol problems quickly, as many people attempt to obscure their problem from themselves and others.
"With some simplification, it's a matter of emptying a biological material, normally a drop of blood, of its fats," he explained.
"It is then injected into and separated in a CE unit. The results appear within five minutes."
According to Dr Varga, this should be a major improvement on present methods, which are expensive, time-consuming, and not always accurate.
