Rehab News:NZ-born Pacific islanders 'more likely to be alcohol-dependent'

Pacific people who are born in New Zealand are twice as likely to suffer from a mental disorder and are more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those born in the Pacific islands and who later migrate to New Zealand, it has been claimed.

According to Dr Siale 'Alo Foliaki, a leading psychiatrist, the discovery suggests that there are two very different types of Pacific people living in New Zealand - with those who spent their childhoods in the Pacific islands being more resilient than those who had lived in New Zealand since birth.

"The younger the age at which they migrate to New Zealand, the higher are their chances of suffering from alcohol addiction and mental health problems," Dr Foliaki told the combined Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs (APSAD) and Cutting Edge Addiction Conference in Auckland, according to the New Zealand Herald.

Dr Foliaki advised that efforts should be concentrated on helping Pacific children born in New Zealand from their birth to the age of six, as this is the age at which they are at greatest risk of developing long-term psychological problems.

Dr Foliaki based his remarks on the findings in the New Zealand Mental Health Survey.
