Rehab News:More young people seeking alcohol treatment

A growing number of young British people are entering alcohol treatment, figures from the National Treatment Agency have shown.

According to the Independent on Sunday, record numbers of children are now in alcohol treatment, including residential rehabilitation and specialist alcohol counselling.

The number of under-18s benefiting from alcohol treatment programmes has risen by 40 per cent since last year, but experts believe many more should receive residential treatment.

Frank Soodeen from Alcohol Concern revealed: "There are fewer than 150 residential detox beds available for under-18s, with much of that capacity provided by the private sector."

However, a Department of Health spokesperson told the newspaper that the government has made significant investment in services for substance misuse among young people in the form of a £24.7 million local partnership grant for 2007/08.

"We are determined to go further by reducing the harm caused to young people by alcohol and educating young people and their parents on the very real harm it causes," the spokesperson added.
