Rehab News:More people receiving alcohol treatment in Wales

Statistics released by the NHS show that an increasing number of people are receiving treatment for alcohol dependence in Wales.

According to figures from Health Solutions Wales, 15,415 people have been treated for alcohol misuse in the country in the last 12 months, up from 10,899 in the previous year - a rise of 40 per cent.

While the assembly government has admitted that the figures are "experimental", an augmentation was expected as more funding had been provided for treatment programmes.

Over the last four years, 660 per cent more has been invested in alcohol treatment, and a spokesperson for the Welsh assembly government believes that the greater number seeking help is indicative as "the success of the current strategy, not its failure".

"Tackling drug and alcohol misuse continues to be a priority with the delivery of a new Welsh strategy being backed by an extra £9.6 million over the next three years," the spokesperson said.

"This funding will be used to deliver the new strategy, including extra treatment places and other support for substance misusers."

However, he said the figures may be slightly misrepresentative due to improvements in data collection methods.
