Rehab News:Migraine drug could help with alcohol dependence

New research from the University of Virginia has found that a drug traditionally given to migraine sufferers - topiramate - could be an effective treatment for alcohol dependence.

The researchers studied 371 heavy drinkers over a 14-week period, prescribing them either topiramate or a placebo and then giving them weekly 15-minute medical intervention programmes with a trained nurse.

Even when counting all dropouts or people who missed appointments as relapsed drinkers, the study found that the percentage of people who lowered their average weekly number of heavy drinking days fell 8.44 per cent more among the topiramate group that those receiving the placebo.

In total the topiramate group saw a reduction of average weekly drinking days from 82 per cent down to 44 per cent, while the placebo group saw a more modest fall to 52 per cent.

Lead author of the research, Professor Bankole Johnson, summed up the results by saying that 'Topiramate has emerged as a promising treatment for people with alcohol dependence'.

He added: "One of our next steps is to directly study topiramate's efficacy in treating alcoholics within community practice settings."

The Institute of Alcohol Studies estimates that 26 per cent of adults aged 16-64 have an alcohol use disorder.
