Rehab News:Middle aged women targeted by anti drink campaign

Women between the ages of 30 and 50 are to be the focus of a new anti-drinking campaign that seeks to decrease the amount of alcohol dependence among this group.

Public health minister Dawn Primarolo said that middle-aged women may not be aware that their regular drinking could have negative effects on their health.

"I'm concerned that a lot of women are drinking much more than they think they are and that it's damaging and hurting them in terms of their health," she commented.

She raised the concern that some people may think one glass of wine equals one unit, while most glasses commonly used today contain between 1.5 and three units.

Ms Primarolo added that the government will make health warnings related to alcohol "quite stark" so that "women know the consequences of drinking" and can make informed decisions.

The new initiative comes after the British Medical Association released a report calling for more government action on the UK's "epidemic" of alcohol abuse.
