Rehab News:Men and women require different alcohol treatment

Drug and alcohol treatment should be gender-specific, an expert has claimed.

Lorraine Greaves, executive director of the women's health centre in British Columbia, said that research has shown that women and men should be treated differently for substance abuse.

"We're finding, for example, that women metabolise alcohol and nicotine differently than men," she revealed, according to the Canadian Press.

"That means we actually do have the need for different clinical treatment for women."

The expert also revealed that women who drink are more susceptible to alcohol-related illnesses and have poorer outcomes than men of a similar age.

They are also less likely to seek help if they have children in case they lose custody of their offspring.

"Even if there are so-called treatment programmes available for them or information, they don't go to them," Ms Greaves told delegates at a national conference on alcohol abuse.

"They don't go to them because they're afraid, ashamed and they feel guilty. That's always our base illustration to see how far we've come and we haven't come very far in that regard," she added.
