Rehab News:Medics call for clearer information for drinkers

Medical experts believe that consumers should be given clearer information on alcoholic products to reduce the likelihood of them binge-drinking.

The British Medical Association in Scotland is calling for compulsory labelling on alcoholic products, as it believes this would be a positive step towards educating drinkers and enabling people to manage their drinking habits.

It has also recommended that alcohol producers should no longer sponsor sporting and entertainment events with a young target audience.

Chairman Dr Peter Terry commented that the association is raising awareness about dangerous drinking levels.

"Binge-drinking and alcohol misuse have serious social, psychological and physical consequences," he said.

"BMA Scotland believes that much more should be done to promote sensible, moderate drinking and to move away from the cultural norm of drinking to get drunk."

Dr Terry proposed that clear information would help individuals to keep a check on their own drinking patterns.

"This approach would be a valuable addition to the Scottish government's plans to tackle Scotland's drinking problem," he concluded.

Official figures show that deaths from liver cirrhosis were 2.5 times more common in Scotland than in England and Wales in 2004.
