Rehab News:Medical expert highlights problems of binge drinking

A leading medical expert has reiterated the potential for serious liver diseases as a resuult of binge drinking.

Speaking to the BBC on Lunchtime News, Dr Jonathan Mitchell warned that young people were more at risk than they realised by drinking so heavily.

Dr Mitchell, a consultant hepatologist at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said that the rising numbers of people tending towards alcohol abuse would cause problems for society.

"Increasingly we're seeing people who've got into the habit of heavy drinking through work or through university, and have continued that but managed hold down a career and being upstanding members of the community, if you like, and have developed liver disease as a result of that," he warned.

The warning comes as a series of organisations announced plans to lobby the government for tougher drink measures in a bid to regulate the level of binge drinking.

A poll by the BBC of more than 100 specialist doctors found almost three-quarters had treated patients under the age of 25 for liver disease.
