Rehab News:Medic urges change in perception of drinking

It is time for doctors and the public to "wise up" to the dangers of alcohol, according to an experienced GP who is concerned by recent figures showing the extent of middle-class drinking in England.

Health journalist Ann Robinson, who has been a GP for 16 years, said that the figures reflect her own experience as a doctor and she urged fellow medical professionals to change their perception of the problem.

Writing on the Guardian's 'Comment is Free' blog, Dr Robinson pointed out that GPs currently have "no real incentive" to look at patients' drinking habits.

"The only way we know if people drink too much is if they come asking for help, which is rare, or once harm has already been done," she revealed.

"We need to change our perception of problem drinking. Not all alcoholics lurch into the surgery looking dishevelled and clutching a can of Super T," she continued.

"Some look immaculate, play a mean game of golf and talk rhapsodically about Montrachet."

The expert's comments were prompted by figures showing that many adults in some of England's wealthiest towns drink enough to damage their health.
