Rehab News:Male alcoholics 'less likely to experience brain damage'
Women are more prone to brain damage from alcohol abuse than men, research has found.
Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University and the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Centre found that female mice are more susceptible to the neurotoxic effects of alcohol withdrawal than males, demonstrating a higher level of brain cell death.
They examined mice ten days after alcohol withdrawal and found that, at that stage in withdrawal, females showed "enhanced brain damage compared with males".
Dr Kristine Wiren, associate professor of behavioural neuroscience and medicine at the university's school of medicine, said that she was surprised by the results, which are published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology.
"I thought there would be a difference between the genders, but I didn't think it would be the most important thing," she revealed.
The researchers also found that male brains respond to alcohol withdrawal in a different way to females, with female brains tending to focus on cell death while males are more inclined to attempt cell repair.
Dr Wiren concluded: "Everyone should be concerned about chronic alcohol consumption and severe intoxication, but females may be more vulnerable."
