Rehab News:MPs back drinking ban for new drivers

A report by the House of Commons Transport Committee has called for a zero-alcohol limit for newly-qualified drivers.

MPs suggest that the alcohol ban should be imposed for the first 12 months after drivers have passed their test in an attempt to reduce the number of alcohol-related road accidents.

Figures indicate that a third of drivers killed in road collisions are under the age of 25, even though the age group accounts for just one in eight licence holders.

At night, the figure rises to half of all drivers and committee chairman Gwyneth Dunwoody said that "bold measures" were needed to reduce the number of people killed and injured in crashes involving young drivers.

"Novice drivers are extremely vulnerable and pose considerable risks to their passengers and other road users," she said.

"Our report recommends a wholesale reform of the driver licensing regulations. Anything less will not address the reality of the risks."

Government figures show that the majority of young people start drinking alcohol between the ages of 11 and 15, and people who go on to become alcohol dependent often start drinking before the age of 14.
