Investment in alcohol treatment services in Bolton means alcoholics now have to wait less than a fortnight for treatment, it has been reported.

Around 700 people use alcohol treatment services in Bolton every year, and they had previously been forced to wait up to six months to receive help.

However, the decision of health bosses to put an extra £120,000 per annum into the service so it can pay for more staff is reaping dividends, as waiting times have been reduced to around two weeks.

"We had really long waiting lists and knew something needed to be done," Deborah Harkin, deputy director of public health for Bolton Primary Care Trust, told the Bolton News.

"We wanted to be able to get the waiting lists down so people could access help quicker and have really worked hard to achieve this."

Following an initial assessment at an Alcohol and Drugs Service centre by a triage nurse, patients deemed to be alcoholics are placed into hospital, residential or community rehabilitation.

They are also given extensive follow-up treatment.
